Beric
The Briton
In Hentys Beric the Briton, sixteen-year-old Beric returns
to his people after four years as a Roman hostage and joins his
tribesmen in Boadiceas uprising against the Romans, proving
himself both courageous and sagacious in combat. The Britons are
defeated, and Beric and his surviving tribesmen are eventually captured
and taken to Rome to be trained as gladiators. When he subdues a
lion barehanded in the arena, NerÎ appoints him as his personal
bodyguard. Later forced to flee with his band from Neros wrath,
he is eventually granted amnesty by the new emperor and returnswith
Berenice, his Roman wifeto Britain as governor of the lands
his people once occupied.
