True
to the Old Flag presents the story of the American struggle for
Independence from a British perspective, thereby giving the reader
considerable insight into the point of view of the Loyalists, who
are said to comprise perhaps one third of the colonial population.
Just before the outbreak of the American War for Independence,
young Harold Wilson of Concord, Massachusetts, visits his cousins
on the frontier, and quickly adapts to the life of a frontiersman.
When Indians attack the Welch homestead, his quick thinking saves
his life and that of his cousin Nelly. He returns to Concord in
time to witness the battle of Lexington and Concord, and when his
father is given command of a Loyalist company, he serves as a scout
and undertakes several dangerous missions, including a long and
dangerous trip in the middle of winter into the heart of Indian
country to rescue Nelly and another captive. Captured at the battle
of Kings Mountain and imprisoned in Richmond, he escapes and serves
with the Royalist forces in South Carolina. After the surrender
at Yorktown, he sails for England, later returning to the continent
to settle in Canada.
