    About PrestonSpeed Publications
The home of books by G. A. Henty and more.

We printed our first book by G. A. Henty in 1996. Prior to the initial release, we spent nearly 10 years researching and preparing ourselves to appropriately handle the task. We can remember when saying the name HENTY did not command any attention at all. In the early days of reintroducing the works of G. A. Henty, we received blank stares or, more typically, the response: "Henty? I've never heard of this Henty!"-not surprising, as the books of this prolific author had all but vanished. Well, we loved the books, and wanted to see Mr. Henty's stories enjoyed by a whole new generation of readers. I think we have succeeded: with 30 Henty titles in print and new issues planned each season, we can say with certainty, "The Henty heroes are back!"
Back in 1996, we were immediately faced with a decision about quality: should we be content with a medium grade so that the price could be kept affordable, or should we go with top-of-the-line and sell to whoever could afford the best?
It did not take long to see that the timelessness of Henty's subject matter and what he had accomplished demanded the highest quality and durability. We wanted the books to be just as useful and influential to the next generation-and the next-and the one after that-as they were to the first. We have had people tell us that their prize possessions were the sets of Hentys that had come down to them from their great-grandfathers, and we want our efforts to be worthy of the tradition and value of that investment.
In the Henty's of today, we have reset all the type to be larger, using clean, modern fonts and spacings that have been proven more readable than those used in the original editions. Our heirloom and trade paper editions are printed on acid-free, archival quality paper in an easy-on-the-eye off-white color which enhances readability even more (in fact, in the two editions the pages are the same; only the binding and covers are different). And the bindings on our heirloom editions are the best available-sewn, not merely glued.
But though all the type has been reset, we have intentionally left the text just as it was in the original, with all the Britishisms and spellings and sentences intact. That is not just a purist whim, however. We did that because we recognize the great value there is in reading a Henty in its original style. At first there may be a bit of a struggle as one becomes accustomed to the writing, but the thrill of Henty's masterful storytelling carries the reader over any such obstacles, and thus builds a compelling, almost irresistible bridge backward, preparing him to read harder classics. And that makes Henty even more valuable to this generation than to his own.
As to the extra cost all this involves . . . well, if the books are still to be accessible and affordable, which we want them to be, we simply have to forego some of the usual price markup for books of this quality. But we're glad to do it. Call us fools. We want to see that the books are done right.
At PrestonSpeed Publications, we will not only continue to produce the complete works of G. A. Henty, but we are also introducing many other products.  Our mission statement is simple: We want to provide you, our customers, with fine works of literature, history, and historical fiction.
